Danbury Mint’s ’35 Ford Rat Rod
March 02, 2010
Rat On
Some like their rods pristine and clean, with mile deep paint and a best-of everything slant; others can’t be seen in anything that doesn’t wear a hundred-grand price tag. But for some rodders, slammed is glam - and primer is the color of choice.
This is Danbury Mint’s latest offering from the “Vintage Hot Rod” series; a rat rod based on a ’35 Ford pickup, with a flathead motor and all the classic bells and whistles (not to mention pipes and stripes). The primer-look finish is worn in all the right spots, and the tamped-on pinstripes have just the right dagger’s edge sweep; both the beat up logo on the doors and the slick, click-on bed cover scream out that rats are “reet”.
The hood lifts to show off a broad-shouldered flathead; it’s been wired and moderately plumbed, and the bench seat interior is a kicking mix of a striped, candy apple dash, a Native American-style rug on the seat, and a whip-thin shifter that’s up.. to.. here. Look above, and the seat pattern is repeated on the headliner.
There’s a working tailgate with retaining straps, a rear-mounted fuel tank (piped into a standard one below), and even a scaled down cardboard box with a pair of Moon Discs. The rear plate swings on chains, and the rod rolls on bright yellow steelies with Ford caps and big ‘n’ little whitewalls.
Hats off to the Danbury guys - this is one righteous rat. - CRM

My first rod was a ‘35 chopped Ford Pick Up exactly like the “Mints”, with out the grill and rear fenders. I was 14 at the time and lived in Washington, D.C. The rod was purchased for $350 in Maryland and had a 53 Olds Rocket engine.I miss it and wonder where it is now. All my addiction to hot rods came from learning on this wonderful Ford. I will get this edition in my collection soon.
Joe another great review! I really dig this rat! You know at first when I looked at the Danbury Mint site and saw all the different stuff they did, it kinda reminded me of like somee home shopping network kind of thing and I was reluctant, BUT, after seeing the review you did on Playing with cars on the Grabowski T and the Lil Deuce and this review here, I realize that Danbury can focus their efforts in many different types of collectibles and still not miss a lick on their model cars. I am still wishing to someday have a Grabowski T and Lil Deuce coupe and now this rat ford truck goes on the wish list as well. Keep the great reviews coming brotha!
