“Rodder’s Journal”
Back when we were planning to launch this magazine, we cruised over to the local mega newsstand to get some inspirational reading. One publication that completely knocked us out was The Rodder’s Journal, a magnificent periodical that’s as devoted to real hot rodding (and the lavish photography and celebration of these works of art) as we are to scale models. So I was happy to get this first release from GMP’s new “Real Steel” series, since it’s dedicated to TRJ - and because it happens to be cool looking as all heck.
This new take on the GMP ’32 mold isn’t a repaint - it’s a no-paint, followed by a gorgeous satin polish that streaks the model from front to back with a dead-even flow over the car’s body. The dull glow this gives the car is slick, and it’s everywhere, even on the frame rails and floor pan. The model itself is the same tool we’ve reviewed here before, with opening doors and trunk and an opening butterfly hood. There’s an included up top, as well as a set of hood sides that clip into place - or clip off just as easily. Beneath the hood is a nicely detailed flathead with twin carbs, and the cabin’s been done in a sweet, contrasting (Georgia?) brown; open the trunk and there’s a “Real Steel” oval affixed to the back wall.
I don’t know how these guys pulled of the effect - but it sure looks great. As far as collectibility, models attached to publications (especially quality titles like The Rodder’s Journal) usually sell fast, and appreciate quickly. Go for it.
